新学期伊始，除了正常上课以外，林欣他们这些一年级的院生还要选定自己的指导教授，为硕士论文开始做准备。
选谁来做指导教授呢？这一天晚饭后，林欣约了安妮去駒場留学生会馆旁边的小公园散步，顺便商量选教授的事。
安妮告诉林欣，上学期末，四方教授曾经邀请她去他在軽井沢的别墅渡周末,同去的还有几个高年级的韩国学生。林欣听了，心头一阵轻快的嫉妒。据说四方教授的父亲战前是日本的一个知名作家，而身为系任的四方教授自己也是个人物，麾下追随着一大批韩国学生。其实他对林欣也还算客气，见面一般会赏脸一笑。只是不知为什么，林欣见到他就发抖。和其他教授一样，他对安妮总是那么和颜悦色的。
≈ap;ldo;我看四方教授很器重你的，不如就选他吧。≈ap;rdo;林欣对安妮说。
安妮耸耸肩说：≈ap;ldo;武市教授也想让我做他的学生。不过他们俩我都不大喜欢。我给武市教授改英文都改怕了！要是做了他的学生，还不得成了他的义工啊！四方教授我也说不上是什么地方不对劲≈ap;hellip;≈ap;hellip;林桑，你呢？≈ap;rdo;
≈ap;ldo;我想请藤田先生做我的指导教授。≈ap;rdo;林欣心里对自己说:因为他是唯一一位对学生一视同仁的教授。
安妮兴奋地嚷道：≈ap;ldo;和我想到一起去了！≈ap;rdo;
两人于是在第二天先后去藤田教授的研究室正式提出请求。藤田教授都很爽快地就答应了。
除了安妮和林欣，藤田教授还带着其他三个院生：韩国的帅金君（かっこいい金君）和白萝卜金君（参见chapter 12），还有日本人铃木。藤田教授每月安排两次ゼミ，他带的这五个院生都必须参加。ゼミ上每人先各发表自己论文的进展情况,然后大家之间互相提意见和建议。藤田教授也时不时地指点一下。
在其他三个院生里,林欣和安妮一致喜欢帅金君。他也是一年级的院生，细高个，眉眼俊秀，戴一副宽边黑眼镜，是个典型的白面书生。帅金君平日里很少说话，不过在ゼミ上做发言他总是条理清楚、滴水不漏。林欣最佩服他的日语：不论多么冷僻的汉字词，他都能轻松地读出来。韩国人学日语本来就有得天独厚的优势，白萝卜曾经得意地说过：≈ap;ldo;说日语对韩国人来说，简直就是换换发音而已，语法都差不多！≈ap;rdo;不过优秀到帅金君这份上的还是很罕见的。他为人也很温文尔雅，一点没有恃才傲物的毛病。
相形之下，另一位金君----二年级的白萝卜可是林欣和安妮在所有院生里最讨厌的一个。是≈ap;ldo;最讨厌≈ap;rdo;，没有之一！这个戴着金丝边眼镜的白胖子为人非常傲慢，一对小眼睛总是长在脑门上一般，目中无人。只有对教授，他才会谦卑地笑，对系任尤其殷勤。林欣和安妮都纳闷他怎么没有投奔四方。ゼミ上，没有比他攻击别人的发言更卖力的，特别是对于两个女同学。不过在感情问题上，白萝卜倒似乎是个单纯的人。而群众的眼睛却是雪亮的，美罗的确是前脚进了大学院，后脚就把白萝卜甩了。他现在的女友也是韩国人，人在韩国，两人只在上见过面。
对于铃木这个人安妮和林欣的看法是不一致的，虽然两人都认为这是个怪人。这位二年级的师兄五十多岁了，黑面短髭，目光阴郁，脸上总是阴着天，林欣怀疑他是奥姆真理教徒。他走路从来都是低着头，也不和人打招呼。到现在为止，林欣也没和他说过一句话。不过他对安妮非常友好，慷慨地给了安妮一套书。那是一套他自己写的游记，写的是他独自流浪非洲的经历。林欣去安妮的宿舍时，安妮随手从书架上抽出一本递给她。林欣稍微读了读，那内容非常晦涩枯燥，满纸都是对于人生意义的思。
安妮无可奈何地说：≈ap;ldo;怎么办，铃木还想听听我的意见呢！可我是一个字都读不进去！≈ap;rdo;
林欣万分同情地看着她说：≈ap;ldo;你只能用日本人的暧昧方式敷衍过去了。≈ap;rdo;
不过林欣还是挺佩服铃木的勇气的：一个人去流浪非洲，五十岁来读大学院，至少他是个有想法的人。
ゼミ后师生六个人常常去居酒屋喝酒。费用总是藤田教授出大头，五个学生各自出一千日元。
藤田先生喝了酒以后，脸色呈粉红状，衬着满头银发，非常可爱。安妮和林欣私下里都认为他是系里最帅（かっこういい）的教授。
都说酒后吐真言。一点一滴的，他讲了很多自己的私事。他出身于四国的乡下。在战争期间，父亲在印尼教日语养家糊口，是母亲一手把他们兄三人拉扯大的。因此说起自己的母亲，他永远是怀着极为崇敬的语气的。
大学的时候，他念的是东大外语系。假期曾经背着背包≈ap;ldo;贫穷旅行≈ap;rdo;过很多国家。讲起国民性，他说印象最坏的是埃及人，因为他们完全没有≈ap;ldo;信义≈ap;rdo;这两个字。
二十七岁的时候，他去美国留学。那个时候日本刚经历了战争不久，整个国家的一切都在重建中，看到美国的发达很是震撼。
同学里有一个美国女孩子喜欢她，总是想方设法地接近他。他也喜欢那个热情开朗的异国姑娘。
但是左思右想，最后还是放弃了。
≈ap;ldo;为什么呢？≈ap;rdo;几个学生都忙问，连白萝卜都是一脸的遗憾。
藤田教授粉红着脸说≈ap;ldo;因为那时候美国和日本的差距太大了！你们只看到今天的日本，是想象不出那个时候日本有多穷的！她不可能来日本生活，我呢，也不可能留在美国。我有母亲，再说，一个日本人也很难找到一份体面的工作。还有，混血的孩子那个时候还是比较受歧视的。我不希望自己的孩子受那个罪≈ap;hellip;≈ap;hellip;≈ap;rdo;
大家都叹息着。
林欣想：安妮听了藤田教授的故事，一定是感触很深的。就连她自己，不知怎的也有种物伤其类的悲哀。
