题记：这是一个普普通通的中国女孩子在九十年代末期留学日本时发生的故事。

吃罢午餐，他们又去了三十三間堂等几座寺院。林欣发现，这些寺院的建筑都非常朴素，看不到雕梁画栋、碧瓦朱墙。唯一的例外是为纪念桓武天皇而建的平安神宫：丹漆绿瓦的应天门、白虎楼和苍龙楼，还有朱漆的大鸟居，在京都古朴的建筑群落里显得格外夺目，然而林欣却觉得有些俗气，还是更喜欢返璞归真的风格。
寺院看得多了，林欣和安妮都没有了初来时的新鲜感，反而是寺外立着的一些小牌子上的警句引起了她们的兴趣。林欣指着一块小牌子上的句子念到：
人生は長さだげではないのです 深さもあれば 幅もある
（人生（的意义）不只在于（寿命的）长短，也在于其深度和广度）
安妮听了觉得好，又忙指着旁边的一块小牌子也念出声来：
人間の眼は 他をみるようにできているために
いつも自分を見失っている
（大意：人的眼睛总是长在别人身上（是为看他（人）而生的），对自己（的言行）总是失察）
安妮不明白≈ap;ldo;見失っている≈ap;rdo;的意思，就去问天野。天野给她解释了，庄司在一旁说：≈ap;ldo;真了不起！安妮小姐的日语这么好！≈ap;rdo;
安妮笑笑说：≈ap;ldo;我还差得远呢！≈ap;rdo;
≈ap;ldo;哟，安妮小姐真像我们日本人啊！≈ap;rdo;大家都笑起来。
安妮说：≈ap;ldo;在美国的车站或是公园，也能读到这样的警句。没事路过看见了，有时还真会有点启发呢。我记得在华盛顿union station 入口的拱形门上面就有这么一句：

安妮说：≈ap;ldo;我也说不大清。有人说这句话是想告诉人们，去一个新的地方旅行之前，应该做足功课，自己脑子里先有足够的知识和思想，再去和当地人交流，就像商人交换商品一样。≈ap;rdo;她又张了张嘴，欲言又止的样子，然后耸耸肩膀说：≈ap;ldo;别问我了！我也说不好！≈ap;rdo;
林欣暗想：在中国的公共场所，最常见的恐怕是≈ap;ldo;请大家爱护环境，请勿乱丢果皮≈ap;rdo;或是≈ap;ldo;请勿践踏草坪≈ap;rdo;，再不就是≈ap;ldo;计划生育，人人有责≈ap;rdo;之类的标语吧。
幸好天野和安妮已经把话题转到了天野在美国的留学岁月，林欣松了口气，也极力找出话题跟庄司聊起来。
傍晚，天野又带着几人去看≈ap;ldo;大念仏狂言≈ap;rdo;，据他说≈ap;ldo;大念仏≈ap;rdo;是≈ap;ldo;重要無形民俗文化財≈ap;rdo;，来京都不看这个是会很遗憾的，而且这演出还是免费的。
≈ap;ldo;大念仏狂言≈ap;rdo;是在一座露天舞台，四根细细的本色木柱支起带着小飞檐的顶，檐下半米来长的深紫色垂幕从右至左上书三个白色的大字：大念佛。舞台上铺着深蓝色的布，淡金色的背景幕布上面突出单独的一棵苍松。
台下已经来了些人，以中、老年居多，像他们这样的年轻人很少。林欣想起在国内，带留学生去看京剧，也是同样的情形。
舞台左边的台柱上挂着个小木牌，用墨笔写着≈ap;ldo;花盗人≈ap;rdo;三个字。天野指着那木牌子告诉安妮和林欣：≈ap;ldo;这≈ap;ldo;花盗人≈ap;rdo;就是我们今天要看的。≈ap;rdo;
≈ap;ldo;我怕自己听不懂他们唱什么！≈ap;rdo;安妮担心地说。林欣也点点头。
天野说：≈ap;ldo;别担心，这个剧最适外国人看！没有台词，都是动作。≈ap;rdo;
好像每次带留学生去看的《三岔口》一样----林欣在心里想。
快开演的时候，又陆陆续续地来了不少人。舞台前设的几排座位竟然都坐满了，后来的人只得在后面站着。
庄司扭头看看后面说≈ap;ldo;来的人还不少呢！≈ap;rdo;
安妮问：≈ap;ldo;庄司，你看过这出戏吗？≈ap;rdo;
庄司摇摇头说：≈ap;ldo;没有！说来不好意思，我这也是第一次看大念仏呢！≈ap;rdo;
终于音乐起了，林欣只听出了笛子和鼓。音乐的节奏非常缓慢，旋律也很单调，但是有一种幽静的感觉。
首先出场的是一个穿黑色和服、戴红帽子的男子，手里摇着扇子。
天野压低了声音说：≈ap;ldo;那个是有钱的人（金持ちの旦那）！≈ap;rdo;
那旦那在台上慢慢走了两圈，对着台下微微鞠了两个躬，然后就退到舞台的右侧后方。
这时从舞台左侧边幕又出来一个人，头上蒙着白布、腰间插着把扇子，背后还背了长剑，举止很活泼。
≈ap;ldo;这又是谁？≈ap;rdo;安妮附耳问天野，天野说了，安妮又附耳传给了林欣。原来是旦那的仆人。那仆人在台上比划了半天，林欣完全不明白他在做什么。最后他从舞台右侧的柱子上方用剑≈ap;ldo;砍≈ap;rdo;下了一束樱花。当然是道具。
接着又出来了一个黑衣短裤的人，头上缠着白布，腰间束着白色腰带，短裤很短，腰间垂下一条白布来遮羞。
黑衣人和仆人在台上你来我往的过了半天招，林欣看得是莫名其妙。最后那个一直站在后面摇扇子的旦那终于拿着扇子追着那黑衣人，黑衣人不住地向前作揖，好像是在求饶。那个仆人跪在地上用小木槌打一堆稻草，最后做成了一根绳子，去绑那黑衣人。但不知怎的最后竟绑了那个旦那。黑衣人退场，旦那拿起地上的木槌子追着仆人打着，两人都下台去了。
这出戏到此结束，台下一片掌声，有不少日本人在笑。
林欣和安妮对视了一下：两人都是一头雾水。那庄司在一边也是一付无聊赖的样子。只有天野在卖力地鼓掌。
回去的路上，两个外国女孩子不断地问这问那。
先是安妮问道：≈ap;ldo;那个黑衣服的是谁？≈ap;rdo;
≈ap;ldo;他是个盗贼。≈ap;rdo;
≈ap;ldo;他是去偷旦那的花吗？≈ap;rdo;林欣问。
≈ap;ldo;那樱花也不是旦那的。旦那带着自己的仆人去赏樱花，赏完花就指使自己的仆人砍了一枝带回去。≈ap;rdo;
≈ap;ldo;那不是也跟偷差不多吗？≈ap;rdo;安妮很认真地说。
≈ap;ldo;讽刺的意思就在这里！≈ap;rdo;天野很高兴地看着安妮回答。
≈ap;ldo;那根草绳是怎么回事？≈ap;rdo;林欣又问。
≈ap;ldo;是仆人打的，用来捆盗贼≈ap;rdo;天野回答林欣，眼睛却看着安妮。
≈ap;ldo;盗贼都来了才打草绳，不是太晚了吗？≈ap;rdo;安妮说。
≈ap;ldo;讽刺的意思就在这里啊！讽刺的就是这种事到临头才准备的做法嘛！≈ap;rdo; 天野更兴奋了。
林欣心想：这就是我们中国人说的≈ap;ldo;临时抱佛脚≈ap;rdo;吧。
≈ap;ldo;我们真幸运，有天野在，不然我们根本不知道他们在那干什么！≈ap;rdo;安妮总结道。
次日天野和庄司动身去大阪，临行前和两个女孩子交换了联络方式，互相保证回东京后再聚。
接下来的两天，她们去了奈良。出发前的那天上午，还赶着去看了京都市美术馆的浮世絵展。
林欣一向喜欢浮世絵里的那些琐碎内容：汲水、化妆、烹茶、哄孩子，给人非常亲切的感觉。她特别喜欢鳥居清长的一幅美人：画面上的女子轻蹙双眉，回过头来去检视自己右手里握着的一只紫色小包，和抬起的右脚。那姿态真是优雅，构图也非常含蓄，只画了女子的半个身子，犹抱琵琶半遮面的感觉。
两人看一张，轻声赞叹一张。大厅里也有不少人，但是非常安静。
忽然一个日本老头凑过来问：≈ap;ldo;学生，你们是从什么国家来的呀？≈ap;rdo;
≈ap;ldo;美国！≈ap;rdo;安妮抬抬眉毛说。
林欣微笑着轻声说：≈ap;ldo;中国。≈ap;rdo;
